Energizers, Pet and Child Safe
The energizers below are 100% pet and child safe. When electrified wires are touched, the sensation is similar to the discharge of static electricity on a dry day.

These fiberglass posts are permanent (rated to last 30 years). Easily installed and moved, the posts are impregnated with a special material to protect against UV breakdown and prevent splinters. The 18-inch posts below are used for hanging electric fence wire at 4 & 8 inch heights, and the 27-inch posts are used to support the green barrier fence

The best insulator to use with 3/8" fiberglass posts and low wires running near a barrier fence is the small, black, snap-on plastic insulator (07-06). The other insulators can be used to modify existing fences.

Aluminum Electric Fence Wire, 17 ga., 250 foot roll |
$5.89 |
|||
|
This heavily insulated wire is needed to reach from an AC-powered energizer (located at the nearest AC outlet) to the aluminum electric fence wire. While the fence energizer's output is safe, it involves very high voltage. Volts are the equivalent of pressure in electrical terms, and ordinary insulated wire cannot contain those volts. So trying to run the charger's output to the fence on an insulated line designed for house current won't work. (This insulated underground and hookup wire is designed to contain up to 20,000 volts.) |

Most energizers need a ground rod but because of its "direct discharge" nature, the Zareba K-9 energizer does not. The Fi-Shock SS-2D and the Fi-Shock SS-740 each need one and with the generally small perimeters (less than 600 ft) of summer gardens, the 24" ground rod listed below will usually suffice.

Welded steel wire barrier fence, 50' x 18" roll |
$24.99 |
|||
|
Low electrified wires can be shorted out by low weeds, so it is important to install a weed barrier 3' wide or so under the entire length of the barrier fence and adjacent electrified wires. This black polyethylene film is inexpensive and serves that purpose. It should be covered soon after it is laid down with an inch or two of mulch or wood chips in order to keep the sun's light from degrading it. The barrier will provide protection against nearly all weeds, making it easy to keep the fence weed-free by inspecting it every week or so to ensure that no plants are encroaching on the electric wires.
